The weather was absolutely perfect, though a bit hot it wasn't humid, and no rain all week. That meant lots of walking, a good amount of color on my face and pate and new food adventures.</p>
<p>First stop was the Roxy Hotel in Tribeca and I'm impressed. Well-designed, plenty of room, 8 floors of rooms, all well-appointed and clean and super friendly and helpful staff. At the corner of 6th Ave. and White Street it's perfectly positioned for downtown exploration and the nearby Canal St. subway station. It was very easy to get anywhere I wanted and there were many great food and coffee establishments within reach. One caveat: it's an open floor plan, courtyard design which means depending on where your room is and what floor the lounge and the music/partying below could be an issue on weekends. It stops around 1am but if you like to crash before that keep this in mind. Stick to the upper floors and try to get a corner suite. Having had two rooms, one on the 4th floor and later in the far corner of the 8th, I can attest to the difference. There's a free for real movie theater in the basement for guests (outside walk ins pay) and a cozy jazz club called the Django that's a bit more refined than the lounge upstairs.</p>
<p>So...food-</p>
<p>The goal was mostly to try places I had never been, were new and/or came highly recommended but what would a trip to NYC be without the first stop to the legendary (deservedly so) and just flat out awesome Katz's Deli on Houston. In fact, I barely put my bags down in the hotel and sprinted over there. Kat's is New York City to me. The oldest deli in America and maybe the best (maybe??? ha!) it never ceases to blow me away. Extremely consistent and excellent. Nothing has changed, not even the pickles (which are my favorite pickles of all time and I'm a pickled food fanatic). Limited though it may sound I always get the same thing: the pastrami Reuben and a sandwich of my own design, turkey, muenster, chopped chicken liver and cold slaw. Both sandwiches with copious amounts of Russian dressing. It had been so long I purposely ate very slowly, taking moderate yet full bites and savored each delectable morsel. I felt a little like Homer Simpson but it was worth it. No need for another meal that day I can tell you!!</p>

<p>I know, drool right? Makes me drool just writing about it.</p>
<p>Next up was a stroll around Pier 26 on the water off the West Side Highway (gotta' work off that Katz's no?). This whole West Side pier system wasn't here yet when I live in this 'hood but though highly commercial it is pretty cool and a nice resource. (My last apartment in NYC before I left was four blocks from the World Trade Center). Gorgeous day, beautiful pier (sans the "party boat" restaurant/bar that was docked and packed with noisy, drunken preppies), minature golf, beach volleyball, play area for the kids...nice:</p>

<p>Sunday brought a new favorite restaurant, Pepolino's on West Broadway near the hotel. I'm notoriously tough on Italian places being half-Italian and with sa brother who's a world-class chef but this place is aces. Real, deep, authentic Italian with just a touch of flair and a nicely varied menu. Hearty without being too rich. The wait staff was extremely knowledgeable and very friendly and attentive. A++ I had the daily pasts special. Spigatoni (slightly wider than spaghetti) and my companion had the rabbit pasts which is a regular menu item. The Caprese salad was superb as was the special cured carpaccio and arugala, the Buffalo mozzerella was sublimely textured and super fresh and the panna cotta desert with just a lovely light berry sauce was primo. Oh yeah, you can always tell a great restarant by the bread and theirs was killer with a nice tomato pate spread:</p>

<p>Monday's dinner (leftover Katz's was lunch <g>) brought another highlight in Terroir, a sort of wine bar (in that they only serve Riesling but really GREAT Riesling) with tapas a few blocks west of the Roxy. This place KILLS. Unreal. Every single dish they brought out was amazing. The Gardiniera was absolutely outstanding (the brine their own veggies), great olives, carpaccio, the cheeses, oh the cheeses, that's one of their specialties and Joe our host really knows his stuff. Trust him. Chicken liver pate was stellar too. If I could give more than 5 stars I would:</p>

<p>I used to frequent Rudy's Music Shop on W. 48th street, especially in my many years in Hell's Kitchen, but they moved down to Soho and I really dig the new space. The guys there are super cool and it's a great hang. Just a brisk 10 minute walk from the hotel:</p>

<p>Back to food. Chinatown and Bao time. A lot has been made online about Golden Steamer and their Bao so we had to try it. Nice people but maybe the most disappointing excursion of the whole trip. Don't get me wrong, it was good just not great. A solid value though. We got 8 big Bao rolls for $7. and couldn't even finish them all. The best bet is the big bun. It has pork, hard boiled egg and vegatables and is big enough that one will do. The Pumpkin was okay too but, as we say in NYC, "meh":</p>

<p>Which brings us to the second worst food experience of the trip: Gallagher's Steakhouse. While the steaks were perfectly aged the sides are a complete waste of money ($12 to $18.!) and horrendous. Terrible scalloped potatoes and just okay creamed spinach. The Caesar lacked everything including great Romaine. My date's steak was slightly overcooked though mine was a perfect medium-well and extremely juicy and tender which isn't easy to do so kudos on that. The wines were also terrible. They brought two different glasses and both stunk. The waiter was very nice but made a few recommendations that didn't sit well. For close to $300. for two people avoid at all costs. Better try Keen's or the Old Homestead instead.</p>

<p>If you're looking for a healthy, great, quick lunch on the West Side Tabouleh at 47th and 9th Ave. makes a killer falafel pita sandwich and their hot sauce is perfect, not too hot, not too sweet and just the right amount of tart (If you like hot--it comes without the sauce naturally). Clean, crisp environment and the owners are very nice and pleasant to deal with. BTW-The pita's come in a whole wheat roll so if you want plain you must ask for it (as I did):</p>

<p>Here's another neat find in Hell's Kitchen, my old neighborhood (and where I consider myself from truly), that can easily be missed if you're not careful. A simple, small store front crammed between several bigger establishments on 9th Ave. between 44th and 45th Hand Pulled Noodles. Unreal. The noodles had about the best texture I've ever had outside Asia and the staff was very friendly. We were the only non-Asian couple in the shop so my guess is it's pretty authentic. The home-made Kimchee was excellent, the fried dumplings were awesome and the noodles were just super fantastic. Not expensive either. Go!</p>

<p>I got to spend the next day, Thursday with my favorite uncle who's been ailing and suffering from dementia. He recognized me straight off and the nurses were astonished. Made me feel good. My nephew (his son Josh) and I brought him some Chinese food from a great place on the Upper West Side called Han Dynasty at 85th and Broadway but no pics from that as we ate in the cafeteria at the nursing home and you know, private time. It may be the last time I see him.</p>
<p>But for all my old friends from NYC I glad to report my nephew is keeping the old Hippie Treehouse alive and well and nothing has changed in 30 years. Hell, nothing has hardly changed in 50 years there! Dig:</p>

<p>Dang, I miss that place. Hell's Kitchen is one of the few neighborhoods in NYC that haven't changed that much. It's changed some of course but any improvement to a place named Hell's Kitchen (and it really used to be HELL'S KITCHEN) can't be all bad. It's still feels cozy to me.</p>
<p>Moving on back to food, Madame Vo's was next for Thursday dinner in the East Village. Meh. Highly touted but not any better than an average Vietnamese place and I love Vietnamese. We're lucky to have a few great ones in Nashville. Madame Vo's Pho broth was excellent though as was the papaya salad.</p>

<p>Had some fancy but in the end just okay Gelato at Amorino at 60 University Pl. on our way to see Gyan Riley play at the New School. What's the obsession with Macarons lately BTW? <p>Found my new favorite casual hang on Friday though. The Donut Pub at 14th St. and 7th Ave. I could live here <g>. Great variety and kind, friendly staff. Got to hang with my buddy Jun who I haven't see in 16 years but we've been friends for 35 years we figured out (!). Such a great guy. We had to get outta' there or I would have burst eventually:</p>

<p>The next day we were wandering around near our hotel when we noticed some activity around a business with no name above the door but all new and shiney and lit. Two gents who turned out to be the owners beckoned us in as it was their first night open as a new restaurant. Venetian food. Why not? Too bad they didn't know a foodie who blogs was in their midst. I felt like a spy. Not enough to not try it though.</p>
<p>The place is called Attraversa ("across the street" in Italian) though none of the people working there struck me as remotely Italian with their accents but so what? They were nice and the atmosphere was good. The wine sucked though. Two different tries were both sent back. The bread was killer though, among the best I've ever had in a restaurant. You read that right, "ever". They told me they have it made special for them and I believe it. The Caesar salad was capable but not sardiney enough though the fresh sardines they had in the salad were fantastic. Just wish there were more of them (4) or more flavor from the dressing. Super fresh Romaine though. The beet salad with goat cheese was superb though. Both pasta entrees, light sauce with scallops and spaghetti and meatballs (a true test of any place but a regular menu item here) were killer and passed the test. The sauce on the spaghetti and meatballs was beautiful and textured. Lots of layers and not as heavy as a Bolognese. No doubt they have some kinks to work out but since they have a sister restaurant across the street they will get there. Check it out. You might be surprised.</p>

<p>And finally Saturday we decided to relax before our flight and grab some lunch at the Roxy hotel lounge which is fairly well heralded. For good reason it turns out. The pan seared Brusssel sprouts were divine (I love Brussel sprouts) and my grilled cheese with avocado, tomato and bacon was excellent. So was the seafood chowder. Good fries as well. Very relaxing and a nice end to the trip.</p>

While my trip to London to record with my free improv outfit the London Experimental Ensemble was extremely productive and fruitful (go to my Facebook page for the many pics of that session: https://www.facebook.com/edpettersen1) I actually didn't get a single chance to explore any new restaurants. It was just too busy and too short a trip. However that doesn't mean I didn't get exposed to some new food traditions, specifically condiments. A year spent in London and nobody mentioned Picalilli or Branston's to me? Blasphemy! These are two venerable British food institutions and, in the right applications, are indispensable. Picalilli is a mustard/pickle combo that can be very useful on sandwiches but I found it best in combo with a little Coleman's mustard on my bread (side note: if you're feeling a little "out of sorts", ie: irregular from travel Coleman's will speed it along. The original strength that is). Branston's is a type of what Americans might refer to as Chutney however it's not as "glassy" or sweet and better balanced for non-Indian foods IMO. Just wonderful on sandwiches and perhaps exactly what is used on the classic Ploughman's Lunch. Highly recommended.</p>
<p>Before we get to Norway how about some travel tips, particularly for Americans (maybe only for Americans):</p>
<p>America, we have too much crap. Our homes are on average much bigger than those in Europe and we over pack. You don't need to bring your whole life along. Those big suitcases being marketed the last few years? Don't do it. They'll just put you overweight for the airlines anyway. A second bag? Don't do it. Unless you have a gold account you'll pay for each extra bag, up to $100., which really adds up if you're going to more than one location and changing planes and carriers. Each extra bag for each additional connection can really put you in the poor house up especially if they are overweight. Keep weight and expenses down. It can kill an otherwise fun trip. What do you need to bring? Three pants, five collared shirts, 3-4 t-shirts, a week's worth of underwear and socks (and really, who's gonna' know if you have to wear socks twice?) and your shower/kit bag. That's it. If you're going somewhere warm bring shorts obviously and a bathing suit. You can hand wash things in the hotel bathroom or home you're staying it. Nobody is gonna' notice nor care. That's it. Do not load down with more stuff. Leave it home. Don't bring expensive cameras and electronics unless you make your living with them. They will just get broken or stolen. It ain't worth it. Nobody is gonna' enjoy your boring vacation pictures or videos more if they were taken with a $2000. camera believe me.</p>
<p>And as for gear for my musician friends the same goes. Cut it down. Your lightest guitar or other instrument. Borrow what you can. A small pedal board (yeah, even for a self-confessed pedal hound like me). Think about multi-effect units. You'll be surprised what you don't need or won't end up using. Bring some strings and pics but don't load yourself down as you will be going from plane to train to car and back. It will also wear you out. I get all my gear into my on-board small rolly bag and carry on my guitar. I check one bag. That's enough. I have learned (and have the back surgery scar to prove it).</p>
<p>So in summary, one bag, one small carry-on bag, personal bag (ie: for computer, medicine, tone cozies, etc.) and that's it (plus instrument for the msuicians).</p>
<p>Trust me, yo'll thank me later.</p>
<p>Now Norway. Oy vey, Norway at Easter. I have been living and returning to Norway for ten years now and after writing a book and recording several albums here I thought I had seen every holiday season but I was wrong. Oh, so wrong. You really don't want to visit Norway at Easter. Any other time of the year, including winter but not Easter. Why?</p>
<p>Because the whole country shuts down for 5 days starting the Wed. before and continuing until the following Tuesday. Most shops and restaurants close and everyone leaves town for the islands of Sweden (where it's not the same exact holiday) or points warmer like Spain. Lots of Norwegians in Spain. You'll find it hard to find good open restaurants (operative word GOOD), supermarkets are also mostly closed and the streets will be deserted until Thursday night which I'll get to in a minute and you want to avoid. Deserted streets can actually bee nice if you have sights to see and know where to go or like hiking like myself but keep this is mind: you are on your own.</p>
<p>Here's something I wrote to my friends on the Gear Page to explain what was transpiring this past Thursday:</p>

<p>Okay, so let me kinda', sorta' explain what the hell went on here yesterday in my father's crazy country: </p>
<p>So for some reason around 50 years ago somebody in Norway (duh, the church) decided the Thursday before Easter was gonna' be a holiday as well as Good Friday and Easter Sunday (they allowed a reprieve on Saturday so everyone can shop naturally...). Right, so what does that mean to the average Norwegian? Go to Sweden where it's not a holiday, drive around in vintage American cars and assorted hot rods old and new, buy as much alcohol as possible and tear both countries apart while pulling all kinds of insane stunts and mooning the TV journalists on live TV who cover this (Nothing like encouraging the savages huh? Ratings! Remind you of something? Anyways...). One such stunt included four idiots on the motorway at high speed, two of whom decided to trade seats in the back...over the roof! The situation is so bad that it's the only time all year the police in Sweden and Norway actually trade places and the Swedes come here to keep law and order while the Norske police go to Sweden to try to control things. Swedish police carry guns unlike their Norwegian cousins so they have to relinquish them at the border. When the Norwegians get tired of sacking Sweden they come back here and camp in parking lots around town and go berserk until daylight. Every place this morning looks like a tornado hit it in a usually pristine, normally very clean and orderly town. </p>
<p>Everything is closed down again today save for one mini mart called Joker (like 7 Eleven) on the outskirts of town. </p>
<p>Religious folk aren't happy they're even open and probably think they're Satanists but their logo (playing card Joker) might have something to do with that as well. Me? I'm completely okay with them being open. They had coffee.</p>

<p>The crack about coffee is funnier when you know that yours truly was stupid enough to open a bag off sealed coffee in my flat cupboard without checking the expiration date (Ouch! 2014!!). Coffee is only good 3-4 months after expiration date BTW. Lesson learned. I got sick. But not to digress...I barely got to see any of my friends this week and just played with my gear, re-programmed some stuff which was actually helpful, watched some online tutorials and lessons (Yup, I do that. One can always get better) and watched a European Magpie build a nest outside my window. Wish I had filmed that. Could've made a neat music video. Or not. Oh, and got this installment of the blog written so there's that.</p>
<p>So, no Norway in Easter. Check. Condiments in England. Double check. Pack light. Very light. Roger wilco! So, we good? Yup, we'uns very good. <p>I did learn something about food on this trip. Norwegians LOVE waffles, their own kind thinner and slightly sweeter than ours but tastier and more textured. Try them with Norwegian brown cheese. I thought, "No way" but it's glorious as well with jam and cream:</p>

<p>First things first, Kien Giang is back to being as good as it was a few years ago. I don't know why it faltered when I returned from London but after two trips in 2017 I was definitely disappointed. I'm glad to report though that after a recent trip it's back to its old standards of excellence and the service is probably, maybe?, a bit better than before. Give it another shot if you felt the same and came up short with them in 2017.</p>
<p>The new spot I've found and tried twice to make sure I wasn't hallucinating is Pho Ann in Belle Meade in the Kroger shopping center near White Bridge Rd. Really great Pho, great entrees and terrific, friendly service. And no big lines or crowds! Maybe it hasn't been discovered yet? They'll even ask you what kind of broth you like (vegetarian, beef or chicken). Both times we went were stellar and very consistent. A+++</p>

After all, with 30 years of rehabbing sports injuries in my background they probably weren't gonna' teach me anything new that I couldn't do on my own and the sun was shining and it was summer. Oh boy, was it summer. It gets hot in Nashville but I persevered. We're lucky to have some of the best free trails around and it was superb therapy. Here are just a few spots that I really enjoyed:</p>

<p>Percy and Edwin Warmer Parks. Right near me and endless. Lots of great hills and valleys and you'll have company to feel safe but not too much. Some trails can be challenging but they are pretty well posted as to lengths so you can pace yourself:</p>

Sorry about the long break but it was very necessary and one of the best decisions I've made in a long time. Now, back to food...</p>
<p>One of the big surprises I found soon after moving to Nashville 15 years ago was among the dearth of food choices then (not now though thankfully) one bright, shining oasis was the bevy of Vietnamese restaurants in town. They were usually the best and most consistent places to grab delicious and diverse dishes in Music City. So, 15 years later how do they fare? Hmmmm...not as good as I would like.</p>
<p>The best of the lot was always Kien Giang for me. Sure, they weren't always the most friendly and they were cash only but they used to be among the best of the best for me. Especially the Lemongrass Chicken and any of their soups. Their broth is still the best IMO. The appetizers were good if not special but even they were solid. However they seemed to have dropped off a bit of late. We even went back twice to make sure I was dreaming or just in a cranky mood. Maybe they changed chefs. It's still better than Miss Saigon, who a few of my friends prefer for they take credit cards and are friendlier but nope, they dropped off as well. Maybe Nashville is growing too fast or maybe it's tough to hold on to talent. Regardless, Miss Saigon fell in my estimation as well.</p>
<p>A few people have raved about the Viet Deli across the street from both Kien Giang and Miss Saigon on Charlotte Pike in West Nashville but unfortunately that was a disappointment as well. My cousin loved his barbecue pork sandwich but I hated the appys and my soup. The broth was far from complex and interesting and they sauces left much to be desired.</p>
<p>The one sort of bright spot was surprisingly a chain, Vui's Kitchen in Berry Hill. Granted I only had their barbecue sandwich with fried egg on top but both times I went there it was excellent, fresh and delicious. Both times my companion got a different noodle dish and they were happy as well. In addition they have natural sugar sodas which I love. Very clean dining area and super friendly staff. Hopefully it stays that way but I will be back.</p>

<p>Anyways, I'm back on the horse as they say and hope to keep up with more food and better posts soon. There's also one more Vietnamese place out near the airport that gets good Yelp reviews so updates soon. In the meantime, pics for ya'll:</p>

Yes, you can make good money doing it. However, I found some pitfalls I'd like to share with you.<br><br>1.You need to get the proper permits and insurance. Each town, in fact each part of your town or hamlet, has a limit to how many permits are available in that area. It means standing in line, filling out forms and getting inspected by the Fire Marshal and yes, standing in more lines to get the final form processed. However I strongly urge you to take the time and do it right (and legal). This can help if you have any issues down the road with your house, with your liability and yes, simply protecting your guests. Should you ever need to file a claim (more on that later) it can be very useful. You may have to add more smoke detectors and have them synced properly and each exit must be easily accessible and can be no more than two doors away otherwise you will not pass inspection. I know plenty of people who are hosting without the permits and inspection but this is playing with fire (pun excused). Not recommended. Just because you don't permit smoking in your home doesn't mean guests will honor this nor can you count on their using appliances correctly in your absence should you allow un-hosted stays (more on that later as well). We got a million-dollar umbrella liability policy for only a few bucks per month so there's no excuse to not get the insurance at least.<br><br>2.Expect that guests will do everything wrong and treat your home as nothing more than a glorified hotel. Even the good guests. Stuff will get worn, damaged and broken. Things will go missing. We left a virtual manual behind of how everything works, including trash collection, only to get asked all the same questions via email and texts time and again and found 3 months of uncollected trash in the cans and in bags outside the cans because nobody took them to the curb. This was all spelled out in our renters manual. Don't be surprised if when you get back your washing machine is leaking because someone put something in it with a zipper and closed said garment in the portal and the liner ripped. Don't be surprised if your coffee maker is funky or your couch is broken. This and much more has happened to me. For this reason many of my seasoned host friends will not rent un-hosted stays and will not rent to groups of more than 2-3 people. I wholeheartedly agree. Sure it's more money in your pocket but you are also just asking for trouble. If you have to do un-hosted stays get a very responsible adult or find someone in your town, usually a realty agent, who manages Air B&B's and ABSOLUTELY REQUIRE that your guests do not check out unless that agent is there to do so with them present. I had a guest in a short 4 day, 3 night stay absolutely trash my house, cause $5000. of damage, stole a lot of items and to top it off left with the house keys and alarm fobs. I dare say it doesn't take a lot of imagination to think they were likely coming back later to do worse. They obviously did not want to wait for my dear friends who signed them in to sign them out. My friends were mortified when they saw the state of the house and realized the keys and fobs were missing. This is not a call you want to receive at 1am and 8000 miles away. So, no un-hosted stays without an reputable agent and no-one leaves without the agent signing them out.<br><br>3.DO NOT RENT TO ANYONE WITHOUT MORE THAN A FEW 100% FEEDBACK RATINGS. See above. Again, it's not worth the money and headache and my nightmare guest used at least one other name on Air B&B to hide his record and claimed this was an error on Air B&B's part. Just say no.<br><br>4.If you have to make a claim you may be screwed. Yeah, Air B&B says they have "1 million dollars" of insurance but there's a lot of fine print and most of it comes back on you. We had to fight like dogs to get our damage covered and even then it was 2/3's of what we thought was the damage. Turns out when we got home it was less than half of what was really damaged and missing. Read the fine print and consider this carefully before you dive into being a host. Can you afford a claim?<br><br>5.Do not do any repairs or upgrades before listing your home or apartment. Why? Because improvements cannot be written off against income until after your listing has been active. And there will be wear and tear as previously noted.<br><br>6.Do not leave your good China, dinnerware, etc. Maker sure you have extras available to your agent (forks notoriously go missing for example). Make sure you have extra sheets and towels for your guests readily accessible. They will go missing. Some maid services won't allow their employees to go into closets to get these items. Leave them out. We lost an iron after one guest. Have a spare. Heck, have a spare of a lot of things.<br><br>I'm sure there's some stuff I've forgotten and I'll try to add that later as I remember and I'm not trying to scare you away. You can make good money from Air B&B but just be warned that's it's not all cherries and cream and the responsibility will always ultimately fall back on you. Guests will complain about things even if you think you remembered everything. Sometimes the previous guest may not have been as responsible as you'd like. As long as you're willing to accept these challenges you can manage well and do well. If you're particularly attached to your house and sensitive how it looks and is presented I'd say tread lightly though. This may not be the path for you. Good luck!! This place is one of the most phenomenal Thai restaurants I have ever had the pleasure to dine at. The sweet chili sauce spare rips fall off the bone and are downright delectable and addicting. Trust me, you'll have to control yourself as not to eat only them. The spring rolls were solid but not extraordinary though. Your mileage may vary. The pancake with aromatic duck were really good but a touch dry and with so many sauce-based dishes available I'd say go that way. The spicy chili pork with fried rice was spectacular. The dining comes complete with your waiter telling you if you're eating your meal improperly (!) but he was utterly charming at it. Now this is a first-class restaurant. Sure, the portions are small but expertly created and beautifully presented. The staff is very attentive without being a nuisance and when our waitress heard us mention it was my birthday they brought out a lovely chocolate plate. It's slightly expensive and I encourage making reservations but worth it. They are also very smart in that they don't over-book. You may notice empty tables on off hours but that's to balance the staff on duty. Very smart. I started with the salad of baked heritage beatroots, scorched onion cream, crispy kale and balsamic and it was really special. The raviolo of corn fed chicken, melted onions and winter roots was also delightful. For my main I had the roast rib of aged Ayreshire beef with Yorkshire pudding (I find it hard to resist a good rib and Yorkshire) and also the pumpkin gnocchi with smoked chestnut, chanterelles, black cabbage and pickled walnut. Brilliant and perfectly prepared. Desert was Yorkshire rhubarb and Cox apple crumble with vanilla ice cream and warm chocolate pudding, salt caramel and vanilla ice cream instead of the offered banana ice cream (sorry, I hate banana but they were very accommodating). Absolute genius. Oh yeah, and the gluten-free bread was the best I've ever had. This is a fairly new restaurant on Devonshire off the High Road so I'm not sure many know of it yet but it's worth finding. We tried a pretty good cross section of the tapas, all were genuinely excellent and the service was very friendly and helpful. It's a cozy little spot. One caveat though: it seems after a certain hour the "coffee" in taps and coffee doesn't apply as we saw two different couples walk after they were told they don't serve coffee after 7pm. This seems silly for a place with coffee in its name but I can live with it since the food was so good and interesting. I would like a coffee after my meal though. The lentil salad that came with the potato tortilla of the day (not what Americans think of a tortilla BTW) was really substantial and seasoned perfectly and very fresh. The belted provolone was to die for with their brown sour dough (ask them for white bread if you prefer) and the platter of Serrano and Iberico hams were solid though I preferred the Serrano to the much heralded Iberico. Their Gordal olives were grand and excellent (I had two servings!!). Let's look forward to growth hopefully.<br><br>So, a trip back to the States for the holidays, a first ever and long-overdue trip to San Francisco and back to London which really is home for me. I know it has been for almost 10 months but though the pangs for Nashville and my house there tugged at me before Christmas coming back to the UK really feels right now.<br><br>But let's eat!<br><br>One place I really had been yearning to try since I saw it featured on Anthony Bourdain's show was the giant torta at That's It Market on Mission and 23rd in San Fran. It's basically a liquor store with a small counter on one side with a grill at which they prepare your sandwich a few feet away. Eggs, pounded, seasoned and breaded steak, ham, bacon, cheese, guac, hot dogs...It far exceeded expectations, in sheer size and taste, and was an experience which is what good food should be, no? However, I could have done without the hot dogs in the sandwich. I don't think it added much to the taste, only the wow factor (which was ample!). It was great though. Very nicely executed in cooking and presentation. The dishes were all savory and extremely flavorful. Just tremendous. Yup.<br><br>Back to restaurants, Cafe Coco is a local Nashville Italian favorite, mostly because the term "Italian food" is used extremely loosely in the South <g>, yet I really enjoyed this visit thanks to the company and the outstanding Chicago Beef sandwich. The Gardinera was just right and the au jus, soaked in it like it should be, was awesome. The tortellini is one of the best things on the menu and was solid as always. My buddy Brian got the bean soup and it looked really great. Hard to mess that up. One big bright spot is they make their own fountain sodas which I can heartily recommend. I say not a huge one because I can't remember a more friendly, attentive staff but their chicken liver parfait was the biggest disappointment, practically liquified, uggghhh, but the ricotta gnudi was great as an appetizer. The partridge was terrible as an entree but the ox tail was okay. The roast Jerusalem artichoke soup with soft hens egg and trompette mushrooms was the best thing on the menu that night IMO. Italian for Italians. What a concept! No wonder it's brilliant. The cheese plate starter is to die for and the entrees were magnifico. Bravo!! Ciento anni my paesano! The desert of panna cotta with warm fruit compote is also brilliant and one of the best deserts I've ever had. It's basically a fancy yuppie diner IMO. My full English was okay but I have yet to find a truly great, traditional full English in London which is depressing but the bubble and squeak was hideous. You get a very "small town" vibe from the decor and presentation yet the food is beautifully and carefully prepared (we sat near the open-form kitchen) and the staff is excellent. Slightly left-of-center dishes are a nice twist on familiar fare and everything was hearty and delicious. Olives, cheese plate, potatoes, squid and buffalo mozzarella were great as starters and ample. Ravioli, pork, hake over lentils also were excellent as main dishes and the blood orange infused creme brulee was fantastic for desert. Not too pricey either. Recommended.<br><br><br>Big thumbs up for Mazi in Notting Hill. Greek-French fusion and though that may sound weird I tell you it's not and one of my new favorite places. The dips for starters are their specialty. I'd skip the fish roe (too fishy in the aftertaste which bloomed after a few seconds) but the spicy Tiropita is a must. They suppl small, thin pieces of fine bread and you do the rest. Super duper. The osso bucco main was excellent and the scallops were just okay but there's a ton of great stuff on the menu I'm eager to try. Desert was a wonderful pistachio and mastiha parfait with green apple sorbet and yes it's incredible and very refreshing. The staff was very knowledgeable and attentive without getting in the way. A tad on the pricey side but well worth it IMO.<br><br>Had a lovely lunch at Honey and Co. in Fitzrovia which was packed and stayed that way even after lunch hour passed but it was superb. My lunch date had the lamb which looked great and ample but I failed to take a pic since I hate lamb (!). However the meatballs were incredible and the hummus was extremely fresh and thankfully seasoned a bit different than everyone else's. A+. I will be back. BTW-The chocolate cheesecake desert was great but we ate it too fast to take a picture! Oh, and their coffee is amazing too.<br><br>Hopping across the pond for a memorial service I stopped into the Old Homestead Steakhouse in NYC because, well, it's just really damn hard to get a good steak these days. Rib eye aged and cooked both to perfection (I order medium well and it was perfectly moist in the middle and very flavorful). Man oh man. Wow. The Caesar salad couldn't used a bit more dressing but the lettuce was perfect as was the croutons. Some more anchovy, or any visible anchovy, would have been a bonus but I've had much worse and that's my only quibble. Creamed spinach, BIG baked potato, best fried onions EVER super thin and delicate and surf and turf all professionally executed. I don't even care how much it cost but it didn't kill me. It was well worth it. Plus, the old-school decor is right up my alley. A++<br><br>Last but not least, and most miraculously, was the restaurant at the Lombardy Hotel in Washington, DC. Holy Christmas you gotta' have their eggplant salad. It is HUGE and without a doubt the best salad I've ever eaten in my life and I'm a big salad lover. It is a mouth-watering thing of beauty. It should be hanging in a museum were it not so delectable. Seriously, go to DC just for this salad. Thank me later.<br><br>Okay, so that's it for 2016. I'm not shamed to say I'm happy to see it go as it's been a crazy year for many of us but it's a personal delight to be sharing my meager, humble musings with y'all and I hope you're holidays and fine, safe and happy. Right! So, the London Chocolate Fest was nearby in Olympia near Hammersmith so I couldn't resist. Fantastic way to try out various brands and configurations you'd never have time or patience for in a store, if of course your local shop even carried some of this stuff.<br><br>My favorite was the Octo raw chocolate with coconut milk (Vegan BTW) and the Go*Do puro piacere Italian organic chocolate. Just the right balances of sugar and cocoa and uniquely balanced flavors. That's not to say that I didn't actually enjoy some of the no sugar added brands which really surprised me but overall that ain't my thing. I need my sugar! There was a coupla' guys from France with large chunks of their fresh nougat that was also fantastic. Loved the vanilla nougat particularly. But it was a very impressive display of countries, brands and combinations. Pics below.<br><br>If you do come to London you gotta' check out the British Museum if you're into that sort of thing. Free admission and MASSIVE amounts of displays. I suggest picking a section and perusing and come back another day for a different section so you don't get overwhelmed. There are also guided tours, one of which I overheard that was fascinating. Did you know that after Thomas Beckett was murdered the monks saved as much of his blood so that they could sell it later mixed with a little water? Hmmm.<br><br>Two new restaurants this week, neither really worth writing home about. Carvossa in Chiswick which has a nice enough ambience, just above pub but classy, but the food was just merely good, not great. Superb pate for an appetizer but that's about it. My aged rib eye was thin and not extremely tasty for how it was advertised. It was cooked perfectly though so there's that.<br><br>Also checked out highly rated Pho in Soho and that was really disappointing. Their broth was a cut above most and their home-made meatballs were great but they were light on the noodles, sprouts and the service stank. They actually forgot one of our appetizers and though we asked to have it taken off the bill they still charged us and it took forever for our main course soups to show up and they weren't particularly busy.<br><br>One saving grace was Adesso in Richmond. Really cosy family-run Italian place with a very varied Sicilain menu. Everything was good!! From the bread, to the appetizers to the main course it was just perfect. Perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned, not too heavy and fantastic service. I even got to talk to the owner about sauces and approaches and compared notes from our Sicilian grandmothers. Loved t. Highly recommended.<br><br>One more place to stay away from in London and I should have mentioned this before: Concerto Caffe. Really crappy pastry and cakes. They look fabulous in the window but that's all it is, window dressing. Dry, tasteless crap. They are a chain and all over the place so avoid, avoid, avoid. Oh, and the service was poor as well. Rather than the fall of London <g>. Fall is magnificent and welcome here. Not a great or lengthy Summer but I love the crispness in the air now. Almost the fall of Ed though. Picked up a heinous virus three weeks ago since my last post and I'm just starting to get well. Kept me in bed and knocked out for most of that time. My buddy Tony Hardie-Bick says I'm now a real Londoner that I got the bug and have some immunity. Let's freaking hope so! That was horrible. Anyway, I did get the opportunity to enjoy a few nights out before being unwell and saw two superb art exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Art. Let's start with the art:<br><br>First up was a brilliant David Hockney portrait exhibit that featured 82 portraits he's done of friends and colleagues (and one still life) since 2012. Evidently he did a total of 92 or so which is just incredible output for an artist after such a long, storied career. The Royal Academy doesn't allow photos but as you'll see I did sneak a few. The security was tight at the Hockney exhibit but a bit less so at the Abstract Expressionism exhibit a few weeks later. Pollock, Rothko et al and VERY expansive. It filled 4 or 5 large extended rooms and covered a great deal of different artists. Very well done. You must go see this before it's over. In fact, legendary British free improv saxophonist Evan Parker is supposed to play solo at the exhibit in November I hear. Don't miss that. What a combo. Mr. Parker is absolutely brilliant and a genius at the sax.<br><br>As for restaurants we tried a few new ones this month and I was mostly very impressed. Some were just "quite good" as you Brits say (for Americans this means "almost good" <g>). First up was Rox in Shoreditch, a Scandinavian-themed restaurant featuring their own home pickled specialties. Now, that may or may not sound appetizing based on how you feel about pickles but trust me, this place is fantastic. Charming, quaint but the staff is great and every dish was multi-layered deliciouisness. There were at least 4 to 5 key elements in each dish, carefully proportioned and seasoned and they just come alive on the palate. See pics below to see what I mean. A+++<br><br>Leaving Rox walking toward Hundred Years Gallery to see some of my free improv mates play we noticed a construction site that was halted because they found the remains of Shakespeare's first theatre on the spot. Pretty cool. There was also row after row endlessly Vietnamese restaurants so Shoreditch is obviously the place to go for that. I'd say find the most busy few and check them out first. That's my next trip.<br><br>Hundred Years Gallery is a great, very intimate place to see free improv BTW. This night it was a few friends from Eddie Prevost's Friday workshop plus the man himself playing solo. Magical. Pics also below.<br><br>Next up on the culinary merry-go-round was Cotto again in Lambeth but I won't go into how much I like this place any more but they did have a new chef this time and it was different but still good. Just check out the pics for new dishes we hadn't tried before. Off to Iklecktik for another show right after and more mates doing free improv. Pics also below.<br><br>Nice little new Japanese place named Yobi in Soho serving super clean and healthy food with specially Italian-grown rice. Great service and nice food, especially the asparagus and avocado roll and spicy miso soup. Second time there the service wasn't as good but the food was still consistent. A neat little Vietnamese sandwich shop nearby called Keu. They also have noodles which looked okay but nothing special but try the classic sandwich. Typical Vietnamese except with chicken liver added. I loved it. (no pics sorry-ate it too fast!!!)<br><br>The real winner this month, which is really saying something with how much I loved Rox, is an amazing dumpling place in Soho called Bao. Actually they aren't exactly dumplings but steamed doughy pockets called bao's and though there's a wait of up to 30-45 minutes it's well, well worth it. Savory and filling of the highest order. Wow. Just awesome. I can still taste it and I want more.<br><br>Last but not least we checked out L'Amerosa Italian in Ravenscourt Park. It's completely different cuisine to Cotto or any other Italian place we've tried in London, mostly clean, healthy Northern Italian influence but really great. Lots of fresh veggies and variety in their meat dishes if they were a little light on the spice but the super staff made up for it and you aren't kept waiting long for your food or other service. I would definitely go back. Specific dishes are listed by the pics.<br><br>One last thing I'd like to add this month, and I know I'm summarizing a lot without my usual specifics due to my illness and absence to catch up so apologies there, but I was dragged to Buckingham Palace and I must say royalty is not usually my thing but that is one magnificent structure and is far more beautiful than I expected and extremely well-kept. It's really worth it if you're visiting even with the lines and security. The artwork on site is an added treat but the whole thing was really surprising and entertaining and I'll never complain again about being dragged along (maybe).<br><br>Rox-<br><img It was a big change for me moving to the UK, something I never saw in the tea leaves for me but it's been enormously rewarding. I dare say I've learned more in the last 5 months than I have in the previous 8 or 9 years of my 14 years in Nashville. Some of that has to do with how narrow the music scene in Nashville can actually be for a place that calls itself Music City. That's not a knock on the people or my fellow musicians but maybe just reality. With so much of the town centered around music commerce it's natural that art, in all its musical forms, can sometimes get lost in the shuffle. There's a tremendously diverse community of musicians in Nashville from jazz to blues, country and rock but less venues for left-of-center forms and actually less venues for any form that doesn't necessarily appeal to tourists. Lower Broadway was a ghost town when I first came to Nashville and now you can't even venture down there without losing your patience and your wallet to park for instance. There are some great clubs for indie music but virtually none save for converted church spaces or after hours coffee shops for improvisation.<br><br>In London improvisation is taken quite seriously, if not seriously attended and has a long, storied history. You will get 20-50 folks at any particular event, probably half of those are musicians in the genre, and though there are only 5-6 main venues for the music at least there's that which is more than most cities. What's more interesting perhaps is the dedication, study and community of the people in the improvisation scene. I know it may seem weird for a roots-rocker to delve into this stuff but my close friends and fans have known about my passion for this for at least the last ten years and I've been very fortunate to collaborate with many of my idols in the field from Giuseppi Logan to Cooper-Moore, Thollem McDonas, Frode Gjerstad, Jessica Lurie, Martin Kuchen and many others.<br><br>For me it all begins in London with Eddie Prevost and his workshop group every Friday (except in August) at the Welsh Chapel near London Bridge/Westminster. At 8pm each week you never know who will show up and what wild and wooly instrument they might pull out and what incredible sounds (or not!) they may pull out of it. Frankly, that's half the fun. However most of the time it's rather brilliant and inspiring and it's usually a great group of regulars who couldn't be nicer and more supportive. I have heard from some that this can be a "clicky" and insulated group but I don't see that. They do take their craft and dedication to Eddie's principles seriously but newcomers are always welcomed wholeheartedly (though some do not come back a second time more to do with the procedure and application of the music than the reception). They all realize it's not a competition and for this music to grow it needs to be encouraged and nourished and it starts at the top. Eddie Prevost has dedicated most of his adult life to the advancement and exploration of improvised musics and sound. He's even written three fabulous books on the subject (more on those later). Starting with the improv collective AMM Music in the early 60's to today Eddie continues to stretch boundaries and teach us all what it means to never settle, never stop learning and never end challenging yourself. With a soft, kind, firm hand he guides the workshops for almost 20 years turning out some of the best and most creative improvisors in the UK. He may not always like what you're doing but he will stand for your right to express yourself and challenge you to the farthest depths to explore how far you can take it. It's a magical thing. I try to never miss a week unless I'm physically unable to. That's how important I find the group and Eddie's work. (If you haven't experienced AMM Music or the Spontaneous Music Ensemble, another pioneering London group, please do check them out. I don't think you'll be disappointed)<br><br>Another key element of the London/UK scene is precisely how it's executed. Improvisation here is not nearly as manic and chaotic as it's American and Scandinavian cousins. That's not to say it can't get rowdy and very boisterous at times but for the most part it's very sensitive, dynamic, somewhat delicate and exploratory. To use the titles of Eddie's first two books, no sound is innocent and minute particulars. Not very much showing off, instruments are fully explored completely, volume is not used as a weapon (usually) and listening and space are far more at a premium. I find this to be an extremely great thing. You can really feel the room breathing when you play in a group and feel the audience breathing with you. There isn't a lot of showing off or blowing to impress people. It's very refreshing and to my mind helps the creative impulse. It's not meant to destroy your humanity but to encourage and embrace it if that makes sense and I have yet to attend a performance around town which has bored me. How many types of music can you say that about? It isn't always perfect but it's also never the same and that's part of the journey.<br><br>A few books have helped me in my personal understanding as well as my fellow musicians here so it's important to note them in case you wish to explore further yourself in case you don't happen to live in London or don't plan to visit soon (though I highly encourage it if you're into improvisation and just want to visit a great, grand old city). <br><br><img src="//d10j3mvrs1suex.cloudfront.net/u/163859/8defafd20ba35eb83557bb70b92a66aa8538adf5/original/imag0488.jpg?1473940705" class="size_l justify_center border_" /><br>All of these books are essential IMO for understanding free improvisation and where it came from. Luca Vitali's The Sound of the North is more specific to the Scandinavian scene but no less brilliant. Forces in Motion is about one of my big heroes, Anthony Braxton. David Toop and Trevor Barre's books are specifically about the London free improv scene and it's genesis. If you're a fan more than a musician you may find John Corbett's book very illuminating and what can I say about Derek Bailey? Genius! I would also search out the UK-based Wire Magazine which has covered the scene almost from its inception and soon the former newsmag Musics will be compiling all their back issues into a book which should be available by the last week of September 2016. These are invaluable resources and I'm glad I took the time to dig in and take the plunge. It was a lot to process but well worth it. You will find a vast discography in most of these publications that will keep you busy and pleasantly entertained for hours. Most of the musicians and groups sell directly from their own websites and are very diligent with processing orders and connecting to their fans. Don't say you weren't warned! <G><br><br>Cheers until next time!The High Line Riderstag:highlineriders.com,2005:Post/43446462016-08-28T04:10:02-05:002017-02-05T11:50:06-06:00London to Norway and back...So it's holiday (vacation) time in Britain, perhaps a lot of Europe (something we Americans can learn from) and a quick trip to the Motherland of Norway to visit friends, do some business and tour the northern fjords. But first some London eats before I left:<br><br>Tried out Cote in Chiswick based on Pete Townshend's personal assistant's recommendation (blow the name drop horn!) and boy was she right. This place is fabulous. Nice dining area, large attractive bar and very attentive staff. However if you're looking for a quiet, intimate spot to bring a date this ain't the place. Very noisy but worth it IMO though the noise would keep me from going there more often. Incredible appetizers, especially the pate (chicken liver parfait) and seasonal specials (4 tomato salad). I had the pepper steak with frites which was excellent but watch it ordering medium well. It was a touch beyond that and with lean meat it could be a bit dry. Try medium or less. The mussels for a main were also very good. Very convenient to Turnham Green tube stop too, maybe one block away.<br><br>The real find of the week was a cozy little place in Soho named Blanchette. Soho can be a mess because of all the tourists but tucked away on a side street near quite a few vinyl shops (a big plus for me!) this place has sparse outdoor seating and a curved bar you can sit around and sample small tapas-like (they call them "small plate") dishes that are all great and filling. The tops had to be the mini ribs but I also enjoyed the summer tomato salad and the frites which were perfect. Full menu ordered:<p>Mixed olives <br>Heirloom tomato, melon, and cucumber salad with Riesling vinaigrette <br>Deep Fried Saint Marcellin (goat cheese) with grilled endive and fig <br>Pan Fried Duck Breast with Carrot, Star Anise, and Orange <br>Char grilled pork ribs with truffle honey and pea beignets <br>Frites with Bearnaise</p>Everything was terrific but the duck was just okay. Could have been the star anise. I was particularly taken with the Fever Tree lemonade which was lighter and crisper than most and very refreshing.<br><br>The only disappointing excursion of the month was the Kew Gardens Hotel. In search of a proper British breakfast...still, searching. Will report back when it's found. Any suggestions? The Kew Gardens Hotel is highly rated and while cozy and convenient to the tube the food was nothing special and neither was the service. Next.<br><br>Now for the travel portion of our program-<br><br>Off to Norway to visit my family's homestead of Sortland, The Black Country, and the rest of Langoya this was the first time I had an extended period of time to explore when I was tied to playing gigs. It was a revelation (as you will see from the pics). Just perfect weather, average of 18c for the week (in the Arctic Circle!) and the lodgings couldn't have been better. The first few days in Straumfjord with my friend and promoter Adrian Skogmo and his wife Anne Mari we got fed beautifully with my first taste of reindeer, the meat of my Sami heritage,self-caught fish made into fish cakes, sea trout, home-grown veggies and potatoes. Dessert? My new favorite Pavlova cake. Oh my! Cake, cream and fresh berries. I could have eaten the whole dang thing. From Adrain and Anne Mari's we headed off to three beautiful days at the other end of the island at Skagen Bo (as opposed to the other Bo where my family is from in Sortland). This was an Air B&B rental and oh man did we luck out. Brand new, modern, huge house with floor to ceiling windows all around right on the tip between the harbor and the ocean on the archipelago. Wow! Good deal too. Very affordable. Then off to a day on the Hurtigruten ship from Sortland to Bodo which was 12 hours and toured all the fjords around the Lofoten Islands. The highlight for me was the Trollfjorden. The final pilgrimage back to my family farm topped off a beautiful vacation before I headed to Oslo and Halden for 3 days of business before returning to London. One of my favorite trips of all-time and I also got some valuable business accomplished which was the cherry on top. (A concerto, opera and TV songs in the works and maybe some vinyl pressing? More later...). If you get a chance to visit Norway, especially between the months of May thru October, don't miss it. I know I'm a bit prejudiced being Norwegian but really it's the most beautiful place on the planet and the nicest people. Very laid back. Heck, I even love it there during the winter and perhaps even prefer it for the serene, still, glacial natural beauty.<br><br>Pics of the whole 3 weeks below. Next month I will focus on more food of course but also a feature on the UK improv scene and some invaluable books I've recently read that opened me up and helped more clearly understand the collective works from 1962 to the present of free improvisation in Europe and the UK. It's a unique vibe and approach and perhaps I prefer it to the Scandinavia and American scenes. Here's what I found:<br><br>Went to Cotto in Lambeth North twice more for a total of three. I still recommend it, though my Sicilian pasta was a little lackluster and plain on my second visit but still better than 90% of places calling themselves "Italian". I'm a big fan of olives and the crew at Cotto win me over each time with a nice little bowl of marinated olives and good, fresh, hearty Italian bread. As someone who's half-Italian I can tell you that bread and olives/antipasto are no small thing. On my third visit I had a very good though unusual lasagna. Not the typical layered lasagna I grew up with but a baked bowl of nice sauce, meat and topped with toasted cheese. It was great and made even better when I dipped bread in the formidable leftover sauce. My dining companion had the fish which was very good as well (pics below). The staff is friendly and obviously love their work and are all real Italians who speak fluently. I must add that a free improv friend of mine (Iklectik is nearby after all) says he didn't like the food the one time he tried Cotto so to each his/her own. He did admit he would try it again on my recommendation. My advice is to lay off the "tourist" standards (Bolognese sauce!) and look to the specials or home made offerings on the menu. I never order off the menu without asking the chef "what's good today?" first, especially in an Italian place. The best chefs use the best, freshest ingredients each day rather than stick to the faves.<br><br>A really great place I tried for the first time is Kitty Fisher's in Mayfair and it was a highly regarded and reviewed place that actually lived up to it's billing. The anchovy on toast appetizer was fresh and delicate without being overpowering (as bad anchovies can be) and I asked and they were Spanish anchovies. Very nice. My main course was something new for me, Galician beef. I can't remember the last time I ate any meat cooked less than medium but they assured me medium rare was the way to go with this and they weren't wrong. I might have been the best beef meal I've had in 20 years or more. Perfectly seasoned and aged and very tender. My veggies were also well chosen, crisp and properly cooked and the potatoes also just right. A perfect meal. I hear Galician beef will be a big thing soon in the States as well. My dinner companion had the turbot and while that meal was also expertly executed she complained the fish could have been fresher. But the wait staff was very attentive without being overbearing and knew their stuff. A++ from me for Kitty Fisher's. Highly recommended.<br><br>Two trips to the Duke of Sussex in Chiswick this month. The first time for tapas which were all excellent and varied and beautifully presented. The pate was delicate yet not overwhelming, the olives excellent, the potatoes with chorizo a nice twist and though I didn't partake in the salt cod fritters I hear they were also great. They have a great bar with many beers on tap but for non-drinkers like myself they have a great choice of Fentiman's fermented drinks and sparkling water on hand. The second trip we went back for proper dinner and they had a great menu with very diverse choices. I had the vegetable paella while my date had the scallops with shrimp over black rice. The black rice was so salty it was almost inedible but they must have realized it and came over to ask about it and offered free dessert as compensation. I was impressed how proactive they were on this as we were just discussing it and they couldn't have heard us. Turns out it was a new dish which is why they asked. The desserts, sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream and vanilla ice cream and chocolate brownie with almonds and any ice cream you wish (I chose an excellent pistachio). They also apologized for the long wait for our meals just when we were getting restless so the staff actually cares and is alert. There's a nice casual feel here with lots of room so I don't hesitate to recommend it strongly.<br><br>If you happen to be in Kew Gardens, perhaps for the Royal Botanical Gardens or to visit Chandler Guitars (!) a good place for a quick bite right near the tube station is Torelli cafe. Even though we got there after 1pm they still had breakfast choices available which I love. I can eat breakfast any time of the day. Mostly Italian-influenced but not your normal straight Italian fare. Sandwiches, wedges of multi-layered lasagna pie, salads, just about anything you'd desire and really not bad stuff and not expensive.<br><br>Last but not least I'm a big fan of noodle soups/Pho's and there's two places in Chiswick that aren't bad, Hare and Tortoise (which bills itself as Japanese but that's not entirely accurate) and Ngon. Both have their charms but are completely different from each other. Different broths, different approaches. There's something to say for both but Ngon is truly closer to Vietnamese Pho though Kien Giang in Nashville has spoiled me for Pho's since they are so excellent. That said, it's a decent soup with good noodles and not disappointing. Hare and Tortoise is more like a combo chain Japanese/Asian place but I kind of liked their noodle soups from the ramen I had the first time and miso the second though the miso was far, far from what I was used to from living in Japan and NYC. Hot Chicken started at Prince's and to me it's still the king. Hot Chicken in short is a whole heaping of a lot of different pepper spices thrown together all at once. Supposedly Prince's coat the raw chicken in their proprietary buttermilk preparation before cooking in a cast iron skillet with a variety of hot pepper seasonings but whatever it is they do (the exact recipe is a closely held and guarded family secret) it's a revelation. I usually go for the medium which is plenty hot enough so you can get some burn but still enjoy the flavor which is tremendous BTW. Greasy, glowing and succulent. Served on top of white bread to soak up all the overrun goodness and topped with pickles to cool you out at the end. You'll wait a while for your order, up to 40 minutes but usually 30 minutes depending on how busy they are but it's well worth it. The shop is small, isn't fancy and they don't have a lot of seats but tables open up fairly quickly. Oh, and they don't have air conditioning so be prepared to sweat in the summer both from that and the heat from the chicken. My buddy Freddy from Norway ordered the hot choice as he's a connoisseur of all things hot and I have some hilarious time-lapse photography of him grimacing as he tried to finish it all while being watched by a local preacher who wanted to see him do it. That said, my cousin Jamie ordered XX hot and as a friend of mine pointed out from video I shot he wasn't even sweating. He wants to get double XX next time (you have to ask for it). Tough stock my Italian side of the family!<br><br>My second favorite is a place called 400 Degrees on Fourth Avenue in downtown Nashville. To me they cook it nice and crispy, juicy, and their hot isn't mouth burning. Their seasonings are a perfect blend of spicy and savory. You have to order ahead there too as they often sell out by 1pm for lunch but they have a bit more seating than Prince's and if you're staying near downtown it's much easier than Prince's which is about 25 minutes from the center of Nashville.<br><br>Another popular place that's opened in the last few years is Hattie B's, maybe partly due to their advantageous locations on Music Row and second location on Charlotte Ave. in West Nashville. Hattie B's cooks the chicken first then coats it with their spice combination before cooking a bit more. It's juicier than Prince's and 400 Degrees which might appeal more to some and their sides are terrific. You may also have a wait at Hattie's too but thanks to the two locations and plentiful seating it won't be long. All three of my faves all of course have take out as well.<br><br>While I was in Nashville last week it was also "Burger Week", $5. burgers at a bunch of restaurants sponsored by local weekly The Nashville Scene. While a good idea to promote local cuisine it mostly struck me as a ploy to get more advertising as most of the places offered smaller "sliders" or were places that aren't exactly considered hot beds of culinary magic (Sam's Sports bar for one). My buddy Steve who's staying at my house while I'm in London tried two places and was hugely disappointed. For that reason, and due to time constraints as I mentioned this was a brief trip, we stuck to the new hot burger joint Flip owned by a graduate of one of those celebrity chef TV shows. Flip had gotten some so-so reviews when t first opened so I was never moved to check it out but maybe they were just getting their feet under themselves. They also had a "slider" as part of Burger Wee but in their case it was a pretty good sized 3.5 ounce patty that would be enough for most people though it's was only $2.75 cheaper than their regular "classic" full-size burger. Everyone at the table who got the $5. special was pretty happy however but to me the big star was the Porter Road Butcher burger from a local well-respected butcher I've used myself in the past. Excellent combination of ground meats, tasty apple cured bacon and flavorful cheese that didn't overwhelm the meat. Fantastic. One of the best burgers I've had in a while. Their beef fat fries are also a star. Perfectly crispy, plentiful and very, very tasty. Excellent kale cole slaw too and I'm very picky about cole slaw and it was a nice serving size. They have a lot of nitrogen-infused prissy shakes but I asked for a plain chocolate and they were happy to oblige. It was pretty good, if a little on the dark chocolate side for me but a little too thick to sip through a straw. Our waiter was attentive and excellent if a little enthusiastic. They had taken some hits early on for uninformed staff so this was nice to see. All in all a great experience and I will be back again to try some of their other varied burgers. A big thumbs up (though if you're in Nashville and want a burger please try Rotier's, a Nashville staple and tradition. So far it's been the best move of my life but with any big change there were reservations; word was the food was bad, people aren't very open or friendly, it's expensive, however the pluses far outweigh the minuses. Let's start with the food.<br><br>Actually, the food ain't bad. I'm not talking typical "English" fare (though I love English breakfast). Generally speaking it's as easy to find great, diverse food anywhere in London as it is in NYC, if not at all hours. Japanese, Italian, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese...it's all here. I do miss the fantastic and varied Chinese choices from my beloved NYC but I'm still searching for that. I love crumpets, the bread is generally fantastic and there's tons of choices for that, great coffee shops, serious tea of course and if you're in Little Italy in Soho here you have to try Pizza Pilgrim's. Everyone working there is REAL Italian and knows their stuff. You may have to wait but it's worth it. I also really enjoyed Goodfare Restaurant in Camden Town thanks to my buddy Sid Griffin of The Long Ryders. It's simple, unfussy, solid and inexpensive. Right down the street from some key landmarks too like the Jazz Cafe and The Green Note folk club where I first played solo in London in 2008. The Green Note has vegetarian fare and is also excellent. There's also a magnificent REAL Italian restaurant (and this is coming from someone who's half-Italian) in Lambeth right off the tube station named Cotto. From the old country. There's a great free improv venue named Iklectik Art Lab a few blocks away that is extremely supportive of the local scene so I will be back to Cotto many times for sure. Sunday Roast. This is a tradition that spans back to after WW2 when it became a regular affair to bond families who were separated by 5 years of tragedy and fighting. It can contain roast beef, pork belly or sometimes chicken but always with a decent helping of a variety of vegetables (this varies from restaurant to restaurant) and always, always, Yorkshire Pudding and gravy. This is my favorite meal of the week. I've tried several highly rated establishments so far for Sunday Roast and oddly my favorite, by far, is one of the Fuller's pubs called Packhorse and Talbot. Really great. Meat perfectly cooked, tons of fresh and varied veggies and the best gravy and Yorkshire Pudding yet. I'll post pics of all the ones I tried at the bottom of this edition of the blog. I was however extremely disappointed in the other three highly recommended establishments (don't trust Yelp!). While they were all cozy and well appointed visual restaurants, the meat at all three was overcooked, the veggies not p<br>articularly fresh, weak and paltry compared to Packhorse and Talbot, and all three had horrible, stale Yorkshire Pudding. Unacceptable! See photos for captions/locations.<br><br>As for the not so great, yes, it is hard to make friends here. It's a little closed off and they are somewhat remote personally which won't come as a surprise to anyone who's been to England. But I was a bit shocked how "unwelcoming" it was. Here's an example outside the music biz - I was in a shop, Oxfam, a great used shop for charity, when I actually made the woman behind the counter laugh but she caught herself and cut it off as not to appear too "forward" or outgoing I guess. Weird and funny at the same time. As for the music side of things, I just want to play and collaborate but encountered similar attitudes from my musical peers. <span style="font-size: 1.4em;"> </span></span><span class="font_regular"><span style="font-size: 1.4em;">I proposed to do some work with a few people in the free improv scene but in each instance they changed their minds because "they don't know me enough yet". Had they even bothered to check my musical credentials on the Internet or was it that no one in in their inner group had introduced me? Anyways, that's fine. I got over it. Especially since I fell in with a tremendous group of free improvisors affiliated with the legendary Eddie Prevost of AMM Music. AMM was at the forefront of the London free scene in the early 60's through today and for my money are the best. Eddie and the group constantly challenge each other every Friday save August when they take a month off. Really superb human beings, every one of them. I've learned more there in 3 months than I did the last 5 years I was in Nashville. For real. Funnily enough the other nicest people I've met here are all from somewhere else. So there's that <g>. But I do understand I've grown up in a completely different culture, maybe even one that's spent 240 years trying to separate their identity from this one perhaps more than any other, and it will take some give and take on both sides. I will admit it's helped me grow a little personally and be more tolerant and understanding so for that I am grateful. If nothing else the British people have a wider world view than we tend to do in America and in my mind that's a very good thing.</span></span><br><br><span class="font_large">The weather is a trip. Fortunately I like rain because everyone knows how much it rains here but I walked into the rainiest June on record in London. Sometimes three times a day or more, even when it looks great it changes fast so bring a good umbrella. The tube is great although laid out like someone was on an acid trip. NYC goes East-West/North-South but here...sheeesh! What a mess! It's taken the entire time I've been here to even <em>start</em> making sense of it and I have a long way to go. But it's cheap and extremely efficient and I also love the double-decker buses. There's virtually nowhere you can't get to with a short walk. The sites are great, the London Bridge, Big Ben, Westminster, but they are LOADED with tourists and I'm not that much of a city sight seer.
