Every Time it Rains
There’s a ring where the water line rose
To remind us how far it can go
Like as if we could ever forget
Some of us aren’t over it yet
Thunder jolts me wide awake
How much more can my nerves take

(chorus)
Every time it rains I feel the pain
And I get the shakes all over again
I see my life go floating away
Every time it rains

The water came up so hard and fast
The time to flee had already passed
The lake we used to call our backyard
Was filling up with our neighbors cars
It just kept on coming down
Like the whole damn world would drown

(chorus)
(bridge)
Every time it rains… I begin to pray
The river holds life
But can take it away
Take it all away

It used to be a comfort to me
I would sit on the porch and I’d dream
The rhythm would sink into my soul
And it would calm me to watch it all flow
Now it wakes me in the night
And I stare out until it’s light
(chorus)

Bumping into Nothing (in the Dark)
Some may say it’s not the same place anymore
And you can’t keep living in the past
But I didn’t come to settle any scores
Just need a taste that’s big enough to last

(chorus)
And she won’t let me stay
Not even for a day
She knows the time is right
I’m coming home tonight
She knows a lot can happen in New York
Bumping into nothing in the dark

We swung from every chandelier that we could find
Danced with every damsel in distress
Woke up on somebody’s floor too many times
Man we made one beautiful mess

(chorus)

(solo)

(chorus)

Cold Comfort
Wipers sweep away the nails from heaven
And wheels keep on rolling through hell
And I know nothing of the things I knew so well
I wish I could stop you talking
Do you even hear a word you say?
If I could take your hand, make you walk away

(chorus)
If you want to change your outcome
You can’t keep doing what you always have done
Or you’ll just stay on the run
Cold comfort Cold, cold comfort
That’s all you’ll get my friend
Cold comfort in the end

I don’t know where we’re going
I’m not so sure if I care but
The only thing worth knowing is right here
When all the dust has settled
That’s when the real living begins
And the lies you’re selling are ashes in the wind

(chorus)
(bridge)
You think you’re days are numbered
And you’re looking for defense
Calling on all angels
And wondering where they went

Cold comfort Cold, cold comfort
That’s all you’ll get my friend
Cold comfort in the end
You break before you bend…

Holding Pattern
(chorus)
I’m in a holding pattern
I can’t go back, I cannot land
I’m in a holding pattern
Half a fool and half a man

Dark clouds surround me
All the way down to the ground
There’s a reason you can’t see
I don’t care if I am found

(chorus)
(bridge)
Had a stand by ticket to love
An unfilled promise to rise above
But I’m all alone at the gate
They’re calling my name and I can’t wait
(chorus)
I tried to meet you half way
But not knowing is hell
They say the world isn't fair
Something I know too well
(bridge)
(chorus) 2X

Janey
There ain’t nothing you can say about my Janey
Even though there was a time she tried to save me
I know everything there is about my baby
There ain’t nothing you can say about my Janey

Sometimes you can’t tell a friend
from foe in headlights
You’re so weak you bend
you think maybe it’s allright
But I know nothing can get through
around my baby
There ain’t nothing you can say
about my Janey

There ain’t nothing you can say about my Janey
Even though there was a time she tried to save me
I know everything there is about my baby
There ain’t nothing you can say about my Janey

Janey....

I Hope You’re Happy Now
I saw you on the street the other day
You were arm in arm with another guy
I remember how we used to look that way
And all I could do right then was sigh

(chorus)
I made it back from you somehow
I have begun to live again
I hope that you are happy now
And never mention me to him

I almost threw my world away for you
Turned my back on everything I’d known
But now there’s nothing you could say or do
To change my mind I’d rather be alone

(chorus)

(bridge)
Does he even know what he’s got in you
Oh what I could tell from what you put me through

(repeat chorus)

Jason Molina’s Blues
I sat down and had a little chat with Jason Molina last night
And though he left this mortal coil he needed to set some things right
I wasn’t surprised to find him at my door for I was headed for a crash
He said maybe I can save your life or at least a little cash
I’d heard his name around but didn’t know him so well
But he recognized we lived the same kind of hell
Art is not a one stop shop and we aren’t door to door salesman
You see others come and go but we don’t compete with them
You can’t look for redemption in hallow accolades
Or you might as well dig yourself a shallow grave
Or fall into a pit of pity and walk alone a ghost In this lonesome city
Sinatra said Judy Garland died a little every time she sang
And you and I put it out there each and every time the bell rang
But we die every time we get it right because we know how hard it is
And the next time the noose is tighter, every night, twist after twist
So try not to let it get to you even though it will
Maybe make you a little stronger as you walk up that hil
l So put the razor down ‘cause it ain’t gonna’ help
Trust me, the option is better even though I couldn’t help myself
But I’ll be here if you get lost, I’ve got nowhere to go
Or maybe you will join me? Hell, you never know

I Don’t Think About When You Were Mine
I don’t hear your footsteps late at night
I don’t hear your voice through the Georgia pines
I don’t see your shadow at twilight
I don’t think about when you were mine
I tossed all the pictures of us two
Your name no longer on the mailbox sign
I cancelled the newspaper for you
I don’t think about when you were mine

(chorus)
But there’s an empty space that follows me
Where paintings used to hang a silhouette line
All I ever asked was to be free
And break loose of all the ties that used to bind

I don’t lose the covers in the night
Everybody says I’m looking fine
Nowadays I never lose a fight
I don’t think about when you were mine

(solo then chorus)

I don’t see your face out in the crowd
There’s no-one to catch me when I’m lying
I don’t ever speak your name aloud
I don’t think about when you were mine
I don’t see your face out in the crowd
No I don’t think about when…

I’m Where You Were
(chorus)
I'm where you were
But you're not here
I've come so far
The path so clear

You told me once
I'd live to tell
I didn't know
You knew so well

A simple song
Won't keep me warm
And now you´re gone
You proved you wrong

I lost my way
On a broken dream
I could not see
The lines between

(chorus)

I´ve looked for you In familiar places
The names have changed
Not the looks on faces
I´ve chased my tail In the darkest rooms
Round and round From dawn to doom
(solo)
You said, there will come a day
There will be light
Might be a long, long way
But one day I´ll be right

You outran the curse
From long ago
But where you went
I´ll never know
(chorus)

You Can't Get There From Here
I woke up in a cheap motel in Texas
Suffering the after-effects of shame
Stumbled to the continental breakfast
A salesman there seemed to know my name
He never even asked where I was headed
But he offered me direction just the same
 (chorus)
He said you can’t get there from here
A child’s laugh, a mother’s love
A memory so dear
I see it all like yesterday so clear
But you can’t get there from here
I was in a farmer’s market in St. Louis
Lonely, lost and low as I could be
When a gypsy woman handed me some green leaves
Told me they would heal what’s wrong with me
Take this for your heart to make you stronger
She said make a brand new start and carry on
(chorus 2)
But you can’t get there from here
You thought maybe in the taillights
The past might disappear
I hear the voices whisper in my ear
They say you can’t get there from here
(bridge)
I met a man downtown Broadway last night
With whisky breath he asked me for change
Just like two strangers tried to warn me of the dangers
I told him, you can go home again
Yes, you can go home my friend
(chorus 3)
But you can’t get there from here
You thought maybe in the bright lights
The pain might disappear
I hear their voices still ringing in my ear
They say you can’t get there from here
 (chorus 1)
No you can’t get there from here
A child’s laugh, a mother’s love
A memory so dear
I see it all like yesterday so clear
But you can’t get there from here
No you can’t get there from here
